Enhancing Bible Reading Through Handwriting Scripture

July 3rd, 2025

Daily Bible reading is a joyful and essential spiritual discipline. But distractions, fatigue, or a hurried pace can make it hard to remember, much less meditate on, what we’ve just read. That’s part of the reason we at Grace Church Williamsburg are using a Bible reading plan this year that repeats the same small book – or a few chapters – each day throughout the month. This repetition reinforces our memories, builds familiarization, and leads to better recall of what we’re reading.

There’s another simple but meaningful practice that can further improve retention and add depth to our time in the Word: handwriting Scripture.

As a form of “kinetic learning” (i.e., learning by doing), handwriting Scripture naturally slows us down and helps us focus on each word. It encourages thoughtful reflection and helps the truth of the passage sink in more deeply. And, unlike highlighting or underlining, handwriting engages more of our senses. It shifts us from passive reading to active participation. We’re not just seeing the words – we’re interacting with them physically and mentally. Over time, this practice leads to deeper understanding and stronger retention.

You don’t need anything special to get started – just a notebook, journal, or even a few loose pages of notebook paper. Start by writing down a few verses – even this small step can bring new insights. And then increase to copying paragraphs or an entire chapter each day, perhaps focused on something that stood out to you or a section that you want to carry with you throughout the day. You got this!

In a digital world full of distractions, handwriting Scripture offers a slow and focused way to understand and retain the wonderful words and truths of Scripture. Through this kinetic method, we engage our mind and more of our senses in the learning process – helping us to remember, appreciate, and stand in awe of God’s Word.
